All Sea Run products start with a major competitive advantage - the absence of mammalian viruses and prions. Although many proteins are highly-conserved among the vertebrates, the evolutionary distance between fishes and mammals, and differences in body temperature (salmon live in water between 0º and 16º C) have resulted in a wide divergence in fish and mammalian pathogens. The pathogens that affect warm-blooded vertebrates (like humans and cows) generally do not affect cold-blooded vertebrates like fish.

Certain salmon blood products are of value for their similarity to mammalian blood products, and others for their differences. Salmon have organ systems similar to those of mammals, but because salmon live (and are farmed) only in cold water, their body temperature range is 20ºC lower than humans. Yet hormones, enzymes and plasma proteins of salmon and mammals have similar functions, and generally are 40% to 70% homologous. Active sites are often identical. For example, salmon clotting factors are functionally interchangeable with human clotting factors and compatible with mammalian tissue.
